Fibroid is the abnormal mass of tissue or common tumor found in the pelvis. This develops mostly between 35-45 years of age and rarely before 20years of age. This do not occur before puberty. After menopause, they stop growing and disappear also.
Generally, fibroid is observed in the uterus. This may develop on smooth muscle cells on another structure too. Seldom, it even invades other organ if it grows too big in size to confine itself to original location.
Fibroid are also called as myomas, fibromyomas, leiomyomas and, fibromas. This is a solid tumor which contains smooth muscle and held by fibrous tissues. This grows as multiple tumors and also grows very slowly. However, a woman have single fibroid in the grape fruit size or even big one that covers the abdomen completely. Fibroid tumor is so small that it is visible through microscope only. It weighs 25-50 pounds and the largest fibroid weighed nearly 140pounds.
It is estimated that fibroid occur in 25% of women over 30years of age and 40% of women after 40years. Black women are more prone to develop fibroid. Almost 50% of black women suffer from fibroids after 30years of age more than the white women of same age group. African women have low incidence for fibroid.
Symptoms of Fibroid:
Heavy Vaginal Bleeding:
Some women suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding. They report that sanitary protection stays less than an hour and passes blood clots that they cannot leave the house. If the blood loss is heavy, anemia develops and also low blood count which causes light headedness or fatigue.
Pelvic Pressure:
Women suffering from large fibroid sense pressure in pelvis or lower abdomen. This is similar to enlarged uterus during pregnancy and gets pressed with the surrounding structures.
Bladder changes:
Most common symptom is the frequent urination. People pass many times during the night or unable to urinate in spite of sensing that the bladder is full. These are caused by fibroid when pressed against bladder and hence reduces the capacity to hold urine or blocks urine from flowing.
Low back pain:
Back Pain is caused when fibroid press against the nerves of lower back or muscles.
Pelvic pain:
This symptom is seldom. This occurs when fibroid undergoes degeneration. The pain lasts for 2-4 weeks.
Rectal pressure:
These fibroid press against rectum and causes rectal fullness. Hence causes difficulty or pain in bowel movement. Occasionally, these develop into hemorrhoid.
