A lung nodule is also called as ‘Pulmonary Nodule’. It is a mass of tissue located in the lungs.
These are non-cancerous or benign.
The large mass of a lung nodule can be a sign of Lung cancer. This is commonly detected by X-ray and CT scan.
Causes of formation of Lung Nodules:
- A bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, causing Tuberculosis spreads to the lungs and forms Lung Nodules.
- Inhalation of Histoplasma capsulatu, a fungus can attack the lungs and cause formation of nodules.
- Other fungus such as Nocardiosis, Cryptococcosis, Blastomycosis and Coccidioidomycosis also cause nodule formation.
- Abnormalities in blood vessels can also cause formation of benign lung nodules.
- Other causes of nodule foramtion includes Lung abscess, Hydatid cyst and Rheumatoid arthritis.
Characteristic of a lung nodule:
- Nodules less than 1 inch in size are generally non-cancerous. But, if it is larger than 1 inch, there are chances of developing into a cancerous or malignant form. If the nodule is found to be malignant and is found in early stages, it can be removed surgically.
- If early diagnosis is not possible, then chemotherapy and radiotherapy are advised.
Lung nodule and Back Pain:
Lung nodule do not typically cause back pain or other symptoms to an individual. But, if it is malignant it causes cancer.
