Back pain is one of the most prevalent forms of ailment that affects almost all strata of population. And even in spite of such prevalence it is hardly considered a disease or disorder. Often it is taken to be just another fall out of our chaotic urban lifestyles full of strain and stress.
The back, apart from being a very complex and intricately woven web of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments etc, is also largely responsible for supporting the entire weight of the body. Both these factors make the back very vulnerable to injury and more so to excessive stress. And this excessive stress is the root cause of just about all the back problems that we suffer from.
Back pain can be classified in to two types - acute and chronic. This classification is based on the time period that the back pain occurs for. Though there are no water tight compartments with regard to the time frame, yet three months is taken to separate the two forms. Acute back pain, once it occurs stays on for a period of about twelve weeks or so.
Chronic back pain on the other hand is a more long-term issue. Any back pain that stays on for a period of more than twelve months is classified under the head - chronic back pain. It is described as a deep and aching sensation in one section of the back and has a tendency to travel downwards into the lower limbs.
As pointed above it could be because of excessive stress and/or because of a previous injury to the back. In both cases it becomes, a nightmarish experience to carry on even with the basic activities if you are suffering from back pain.
The bad news about chronic basic is that one you are affected by it, it usually stays on with you for your lifetime. But that doesn't mean that a person suffering from chronic back pain is destined for a lifetime of pain and agony. There are various ways of countering this problem, and they are quite effective I must admit.
The easiest and most obvious method of easing back pain is maintaining the right posture, more often than not. This eases the stress on the back to a greater extent, proving to be more than effective in countering chronic back pain. Light strengthening exercises for the back, stretching etc. coupled with right posturing can and do go a great distance in giving you the much needed relief from chronic back pain.
