Get Rid of Back Pain with a Simple Walking Exercise
That’s what is claimed by Dr. Michal Katz-Leurer of Tel Aviv University’s Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine. In a recent study, she reports that walking 2 – 3 times a week for about 20 – 40 minutes is probably the best way to gain relief from low back pain.
The simplicity of the walking exercise and its independence from gym equipments and weights makes walking the most convenient way to deal with back pain.
A simple natural walking plan is as effective as clinical therapy is reducing lower back pain, found by new research.
Get rid of Back Pain with Walking – The Research Study
In the study, the researchers chose 52 patients suffering from low back pain, who were assessed through questionnaires to understand their everyday back problems, pain threshold, exercise routines and the everyday activities they avoided due to back pain.
Half the patients were asked to undergo a muscle strengthening program where they were asked to come for exercise classes at set intervals over 6 weeks. The other half were asked to walk 2-3 times a week post an aerobic walking program, progressing from 20 minutes to 40 over a period of time/
The analysis after this study showed that both groups improved in all the parameters, leading the researchers to conclude that walking is as effective as any strengthening program.
Walking does much more than just reduce back pain among patients as it helps lower blood pressure reduces stress, boosts immune system function and brain activity.
Dr. Katz-Leurer says that the habit of walking also encourages patients to follow a healthy lifestyle and improves their endurance as supported by the data from the study which showed patients were able to walk 0.05 miles more in a 6 minute walking test towards the end of the study.
