Healing a Herniated Disc

People who ignore acute lower back pains need to be careful. The very people who seem less concerned about the pain can suffer profusely at a later stage in life for this can be a disc hernia.

  • Rest.

    The first and foremost thing to do is rest. Proper and enough rest would itself take care of the problem. It is important for people who have herniated discs to rest on their backs to avoid any excess pressure on the spine. Adults would require rest for at least 6-8 hours while adolescents would require at least 8-10 hours of night sleep.


  • No strenuous activities.

    Avoiding activities like bending, lifting, running, jogging et. that place extra pressure on the spine should be avoided to enable a quick recovery. This helps both a speedy and natural recovery of the muscles.


  • Cinnamon.

    It is believed by many holistic specialists that cinnamon can provide a relief in patients with a disc hernia. Consuming cinnamon rich foods or products can be helpful in alleviating pain. Also, paste of cinnamon can provide relief when rubbed over the pain inflicted area. Cinnamon paste can be made by mixing a tablespoon of honey, a quarter cup of rose water and a table spoon of cinnamon.


  • Hot/Cold compress.

    Cold compress can help alleviate the swelling and aching upon initial injury. While a hot compress can be useful helping the muscles relax. Though not a cure to the problem itself, can deal with the pain temporarily. It is important to consult a physician immediately and seek advice.


  • Swim.

    Swimming helps in dealing with back pain problems effectively. Especially those who have a disc hernia, can benefit a lot due to the arching of the back while swimming. Blood flow is also improved due to swimming and can heal injured areas quickly. Doing a breast stroke or swimming on the back can be very helpful.


  • Prone position.

    Lying in a prone position while in bed arches the back and can help alleviate the pain quickly. Arching the back can be done with the help of the hands. If this exercise pains, it is better to stop immediately.

involves  patience and time along with proper exercise and treatment. Drinking liquids rich with minerals and vitamins along with consuming healthy food can also speed up the recovery time.
