What Is Cervical Kyphosis? – Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment Of Cervical Kyphosis

If the normal curve of the neck begins to straighten, it is considered as “

cervical kyphosis

”. This can extend to any point like, the neck curve actually reverses and goes in the opposite direction from the healthy, normal way. Some research studies revealed that cervical kyphosis causes pain in the neck.

Normal cervical lordosis is measured around 31° – 40° curve. Researchers found that patients with 20° or less experience neck pain along with cervical kyphosis.

Causes of Cervical Kyphosis:

The following are some causes for Cervical Kyphosis.

  • Inherited congenital conditions and diseases
  • Infection
  • Traumatic injury, like compression fracture, iatrogenic injury or whiplash
  • Systematic diseases, like osteoporosis
  • Wear and tear of degenerative discs that weakens the vertebrae

Diagnosis of Cervical Kyphosis:

It is easy to check the neck bones lining up in a straight line. An X-ray can be helpful for detecting the cervical kyphosis and also shows the following:

  • presence of arthritis
  • stenosis
  • disc degeneration
  • other conditions

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) gives a view of nerves and soft tissues.

Doctor checks the history and learns about the condition of the patient. He or she examines the pain and range of movements. He or she may prescribe a nerve test also.

Treatments for Cervical Kyphosis:

Surgery is the typical treatment for cervical kyphosis. Early surgical treatment gives best results and can prevent the progression of curve. Conservative treatments do not have much success rate when compared to surgery.

  • Conservative Treatment:

    Treatment depends mostly whether there is pressure on the spine. If pressure is there, surgery is recommended. If this is causing pain, doctor tries to control the pain and deformity in the neck brace for short periods of time, physical therapy and pain medications.

  • Physical Therapy:

    A rehabilitation program is assisted by the physical therapist and calms down the pain and inflammation. This also improves strength and mobility, and helps you in doing the daily activities with ability and ease.

  • Exercise:

    This also helps in changing the neck curve. Hence, it helps in relieving the pain.
